I can't say enough about Monaco or Nice

The Monte Carlo Casino - This is where they filmed the James Bond movie Casino Royal.

Coming into Monaco Harbor - OMG! Full of mega yachts. Frank was in haven. He took over 100 pics. He was on his glory.

Nice, France.....Old town

The flower market which they set-up early morning and take everything down by noon to e to set-up table and chairs for lunch and dinner. Everything is orchestrated to perfection. Flower market out and lunch tables in....

You can see from this picture how close the buildings are together. Sometimes only a baby stroller would fit.

This is a church second largest to Saint Petersburg in Russia.

Of course, we had to try the pastries.

After being up for nearly 24 hours we finally made it to Barcelona In one piece. Even our luggage arrived which is always a concern. The airport was a work of art in itself and could not wait to go exploring the city of Barcelona. The floors were made of shiny black marble it felt like you were walking on water. Very strange feeling. We stayed at The Barcelona Universal. After a good night rest we headed out by the underground Metro and our first stop was "La Sagrada Familia". It was amazing to see how many people that were waiting to visit the church. The line was wrapped around the block in the blistering sun but it was worth the wait. I can only say it brought tears to my eyes. It was magnificent! The ongoing architectural structure that has been going on since the 1900's is an absolute wonder. Every facet of the structure represented some part of nature in one way or the other. I could have stayed there all day and seen every corner of the cathedral.

Antonoio Gaudi designed the church 1883. Unfinished after a century, with massive spires lacks completed walls and a roof. To this day it continues to be worked on. It is a work of art. he truly was a visionary.

We also went to the Park Guell.....Beautiful mosaic.....

Pictures from other areas we visited in Barcelona. The buildings were all works of art. I would have loved another two days to see everything.

We took hundreds of pictures and it is just the first leg of our trip. We are now underway to Nice, France and yes more pictures. Keep checking back I will keep posting about our trip.

I took a "mini vacation" in my own town. It was fun discovering a new area I had never been. About an hour away from my home in the town of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec we went to a place called Alena Kirby. Their florist area is too wonderful and they also have a very nice boutique full of all sorts of fun kitchen gadgets and bath things but the best part was the cooler full of their truffles. It was a great day of exploring new areas!

I had the great pleasure of seeing these costumes firsthand in Ottawa, Ontario when I was attending the ADU/FAC Retreat. The troupe was from Italy to perform their banner throwing to celebrate Italian week. These costumes were vintage. Some where worth over 50,000 Euros!

It seems like forever since I posted. Time really gets away and before your know it 2 months have gone and I haven't posted anything in my blog. Ok, for the next couple of days I will try to update everyone on what is going on my art world.

First I would like to start by sharing some pictures from the cruise in February
"Cruising to Wonderland" ten glorious days of teaching on the cruise ship Royal Caribbean with Patti Culea and Cyndi Mahlstadt. Each teacing our on project to 24 students Patti taught "Maddie Haddie", Cyni taught "Alice and Garden" and I taught the "Queen of Tarts". Are we going to do another cruise?!?! You betcha! Look for more informaiton for the cruise in 2013. More details to come.

Organizing My Books

I thought I would share this book organization project

For the last several months I have been a busy beaver cataloging all my books that have seem to multiply. Of course, if I would stop ordering, this would not be the case. So, it was time to catalog and stop ordering the same book twice or not finding them at all within the masses of books.

I would like to share with you how I went about doing this. I first categorized all the books. For example: Beading, Bead Embroidery, Jewelry, Wire Works (Green), Crafts (Black), Doll Making (Purple/Blue), Dover Books (Yellow/Blue), Drawing (Red/Purple), Fashions (Yellow/Red) etc. I can tell you I had books everywhere. I didn’t realize how many books I had and had several doubles too.

I also color coded all the books according to the category with large adhesive dots which I cut in half when there were two colors for the category. Now, from there I set-up a “Home Library” folder in Excel and logged all the books within their own file. I set-up the file with these headings: Title, Author, Category, Cover Type, Condition, Notes. You can go further and add the ISBN# but I had so many books to enter that I felt this would be enough for me.

Now I can go to my computer and check before I order a book and if I pull a book out I just have to look at the color dots and they go back into that section. I generally don’t lend my books but if that would happen I can make a note for that book on my computer plus put a post it note in that grouping to remind me one is missing.

I know this seems like a big undertaking but I just set it up that I would do so many over a weekend. It feels good to have the books in order and in place. I hope this helps someone that is dealing with lots of books to keep in order

Here is my 5th one completed. When I start one of these little "jewels" I never know were they will take me. I am always surprised at the end. I think one of the most exciting thing for me, besides completing the piece, it to achieve a good balance with the different patterns. It really becomes a challenge.

I was recently visiting my mother in Alabama and my daughter, who is now 38, said that she had come across my old Barbie's. I could not believe that she still had them. They are over 45 years old and in wonderful shape. It was tons of fun sitting looking through all the clothes and accessories. It really brought back many memories. My grandkids, 16 and 9, really got a big kick out of seeing the clothes that I had designed and made. Yes, I really played with them!

My First BJD - Its Arrival

I ordered my BJD from Korea on April 24th and have been checking weekly to see if she had shipped. Finally, Monday I got the notice that she was on her way. IT ARRIVED TODAY!!!! I am so excited and she is as beautiful as I had pictured her on the Dollstown site. She came in a cardboard box which was protecting the pretty blue doll box.

She was packaged beautifully in bubble wrap and they had her laying on a pretty white pillow, which I thought was clever. What was a surprise is how heavy she was.

From Montreal she goes to Toronto to get her face, hands and feet painted and when she returns she will get eyes, hair and an outfit, which are waiting for her when she makes it back home. I will continue to post progress pictures of her journey.

The Elder Elves are a brotherhood of the world’s most senior (in age as well as stature) elves,. They gather every 3.333 years to discuss the global status of elfdom, plan future good works and generally pontificate on life as they have seen it. Dressed in typical elf garb of breeches and turned up shoes, they flaunt their status in ornately embellished cloaks and are inordinately proud of their flowing white hair, beards and moustaches.

The Elder Elf stands about 9” tall and is self supporting. He is fully wired and has articulated fingers which make for posing options. His face is extensively needle sculpted beneath his beard, moustache and eyebrows. His clothing includes a long sleeved “buttoned up” shirt, breeches with “buttons” at the knee and front opening and a cloak that has been designed for elaborate embellishment. His leather shoes have turned up toes and on his head he wears an ear flapped stocking cap.

The student will be guided through the fabric and template/pattern preparation and the sewing of the various body parts.
They will then create the individual limb armature, stuff the body and limbs, needle sculpt the head insert the eyes and apply the eyelids and then apply ‘make up’, hair, beard and moustache. After sewing the figure together so he will stand (or be posed) the student will create the clothing for their own individual Elder Elf.
Options will be discussed throughout the class for alternative construction techniques, needle sculpting, costuming, etc.

TECHNIQIES TO BE TAUGHT

-Students will learn about fabric selection for the Elder Elf.
-They will learn how to quickly and easily transfer the pattern onto freezer paper and prepare the templates/patterns for sewing.
-They will be guided through the sewing of all body parts, including the tiny hands and feet.
-The students will learn how to create individual limb armature which will allow the figure to stand alone or be posed.
-Students will learn extensive needle sculpting to create a lower lip as well as a large well defined nose and cheeks.
-They will learn how to apply the glass eyes and cloth eyelids.
-They will learn how to use their figure’s head to create a pattern for a wig (hair piece), moustache and beard.
- Students will learn to create the clothing for their figures using usual, and not so usual sewing techniques.
-Students will learn how to make a simple leather shoe.

Starting Date: May 5, 2010

In this project, we will be creating a penguin from an egg gourd. Make just one, or create an entire colony!
After cleaning and preparing the gourd, the penguin features will be sculpted onto the gourd with Paperclay over glued-on cardboard additions. After drying and sanding, we will paint the penguin with acrylics to resemble either a Chinstrap or Emperor Penguin. Detailed instructions will be given for both species.

Finished size: 4-6" depending on size of gourd

Week One: Cleaning and prepping the gourd, attaching the base, and sculpting the feet and tail.
Week Two: Sculpting the head and wings.
Week Three: Painting and finishing.

You can hear the African Drums beating in the distance. The natives are restless waiting with great anticipation for the "Witch Doctor's" arrival. All the while wondering "What wonderful shoes and accessories will he be wearing this time?" Will they be fuzzy and pink? Will they be red? Will they have so much "bling" on them that they will have to wear sunglasses to welcome him? Will they be made out of animal skins, from his latest victim?Witch doctors are steeped in rituals. They work in a sacred healing hut, where their ancestors reside. They have specific colored cloths to wear to please each ancestor and often wear the gallbladder of the goat sacrificed at their graduation ceremony in their hair. They summon the ancestors by burning a plant while dancing, chanting and most importantly playing drums.The "Witch Doctor" will soon arrive for the big Gala 2010, sporting all his beads and colored fabrics. And Oh Yes, we can't forget about his shoes!!! He will be ready to "p a r t é y" and to enchant all those in attendance.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think my daughter would ever be queen of Mardi Gras. However, in all the excitement and anticipation, there was a waiting period of 2 years before the announcement could be made public. In the meantime, all the necessary preparations were on their way. I can assure you that the two years was certainly not enough time to prepare for such an extraordinary event.
The check-list contained:
1) Designing the Crown and Scepter
2) Queen’s Jewelry
3) Designing the dress
4) Designing the collar
5) Designing a 16ft train
6) Shoes
7) Evening dresses for special engagement

Designing the train was the most difficult. Creating the design had to be different than any other design in the past; hence, we featured the crest of the organization that nobody had ever showcased. We also incorporated her “A” and mine, for our names and two fluttering butterflies representing each of my granddaughters, Brittany and Skyler. The main fabric was red velvet, trimmed in 12” iridescent gold trim, rhinestones sprinkled throughout the train.

Deciding on the evening gown was another thing. She had her mind set on a certain style but everything that we found was too plain. So mom to the rescue; did all the beading on the dress in Swaroski crystals (Siam AB) with clear crystals and touches of gold beading. Keeping in mind that red was in the train we had to keep the continuity of the color and design.

The crown and scepter were custom made by a Mardi Gras crown maker who has been making crowns for Mardi Gras kings and queens for over 50 years. Again we took everything a step further and designed the crown and scepter in Swaroski crystals with Siam AB crystals, a little flamboyant, showy and most pretentious, but why not, she was Queen of the Mardi Gras. A successful coup that had never been demonstrated before in this particular organization. The crown and scepter were personalized with the “A” and special stones were inserted to represent the different family members. Since I was the Queen’s mom my stone was in the center of her scepter. How cool is that?!

Menopause "The Musical"

I had a chance to go see this musical and it was sooooooooooooo funny. If you get the opportunity to go see it....GO!!!

“The Hilarious Celebration of Women and The Change®,” the original, off-Broadway musical begins with four women, “Professional Woman,” “Soap Star,” “Iowa Housewife” and “Earth Mother,” at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra - and hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex, too much sex and day-to-day challenges with aging parents, aging children and aging partners. They share their ups and downs through a collection of 25 re-lyricized baby boomer songs from the 60's, 70's and 80s. Disco hit “Stayin’ Alive” becomes “Stayin’ Awake,” Motown favourite “My Guy” is transformed into “My Thighs,” "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" switches to "In the Guest Room or on the Sofa, My Husband Sleeps at night,” and “Puff The Magic Dragon” becomes the anthem to exercise, Puff, My God I’m Draggin’”.

It’s a show within a show and a character within a character… within a character, when Julie Andrews plays Victoria playing Victor playing Marie Antoinette in the lavish “ Louis XVI” production number. Whew! Her elaborate period costume begins with a gold metallic and white brocade corset trimmed with gold metallic ribbon, white pearl braid, silk chiffon sleeves, three different widths of white lace, sheer trim with ribbon threaded through it, Austrian crystals on the front, gold lacing up the back and hand dyed rosettes. Her white silk chiffon skirt is supported by handmade wire panniers wrapped in satin ribbon and embellished with white feather boa and more rosettes like the ones on her corset and on her metallic gold ribboned shoes. Her fluffy silk chiffon headdress is built on a metallic gold lamé base that has a Velcro opening on the side so that at the climax of the number “Marie” can reveal that she is a he, with a sleek brown felt masculine wig underneath. Even the stand is handmade to show off this winner and the eyebrows sport the same glitter as Miss Andrews did making her, him, er her definitely Le Jazz Hot!

My Broadway Bear from last year was Merlyn:

Broadway Bear XII
Once you encounter this magical Merlyn Bear - armatured, posable and poised on his turf-covered custom-made base - you’ll come away with a whole new appreciation for the power of crystal! Created from a sketch of the Broadway original, the wizard of the realm is lavishly draped in a deep forest-green velvet robe embossed all over with stars and magical circles, sprinkled with hand-beaded Swarovski AB crystals, lined with gold lamé - and, in the sleeves, with a metallic gold-and-green crinkle fabric. 2 ¼" panels of sage Dupioni silk edge the robe openings and a 3 ¼" panel runs down the back as well. Additionally, the robe is trimmed out with metallic seed beads on the edges and gold metallic threads tipped with French knots down the front. Around his middle - a hand-dyed light-green belt with a vintage emblem adorned with Swarovski crystals. His high-collared, flowing cape is made from imported gold mesh generously beaded-and-sequined (primarily in shades of lilac) with a delicate leaf-and-flower motif and accented with more Swarovski crystals. His undergarment is a pair of sage Dupioni boxers. On his feet are caramel-colored, suede custom boots. His magical staff is hand-sculpted from clay, painted in gold and embedded with Swarovski crystals. An amber glass globe sits atop it, topped with Swarovski crystals. Those long, crimped mohair locks have been hand-dyed in a pale green and sprinkled with glitter and diamond Swarovski crystals. He even wears a multi-color Rivoli Swarovski crystal (27 mm in diameter) encased in hand-beaded Swarovski AB fuchsia crystals. It doesn’t take a wizard to see the magic of Camelot in this creation!

“The Gift” ©

“The Gift”© was created especially to celebrate the “Doll Crafter and Costuming” 25th Anniversary. It was fashioned as a figurative art fantasy with the thought of having a special earthling as a courier of memorable gifts. Not a fairy, not a creature, not an animal but a combination of all, something like a Cicada but lovelier, more like a Wood Nymph, having enlarged wings to carry heavy gifts.

It is a wire armature figure with cloth head and hands. The head is needled sculpted and skinned. The entire costume is made from bias cut hand dyed ribbons. Her shoes are sculpted from two-part Aves Apoxy sculpt. The embellishments consist of hand dyed Hanah silk ribbons, Mokuba ribbons and Swarovski crystals.
The wings are removable and made from acetate and hand painted. The antennas are individually wrapped on special tubing.

This is a one-of-a-kind handmade figurative piece measuring base 12” x 16”.
The figure itself measures 18”.

She makes her debut in the August 2009 anniversary issue of Doll Crafter & Costuming.
